One of my main objectives is to be a Leader who will listen to what all Canadian Liberals have to say, both members and supporters, in order to further develop a platform that feeds from your ideas and reflects your most pressing concerns.

I think a fundamental problem with our political system is that it is so adversarial. We as Canadians have seen a lot of instances where one party makes a big deal about how wrong the government in power plan only to do the same thing later on. One example is fighting the GST, then saying it will be scraped yet it is still here. Being in power should not be about building a legacy for the sake of having a place in history. If a leader does good work they will be remembered for their good work and for being a good leader. All that to say, the next leader should possess the ability to put personal abition aside, be a good Canadian and work of building a better Canada for all Canadians. Each and every elected MP should be free to represent the people who put them in power and by extention the leader as potentially the PM.
Critical thinking, innovation, creativity, openness, evidence-based decision making, a strong moral character (that is to say, the courage to speak up for what she or he believes is right), honesty, integrity, an appreciation for science and economics. Also, I think that it is essential that any leader read Systems of Survival by Jane Jacobs, because in it, Jane Jacobs formulates perhaps the most elegant analysis of a just society I have ever encountered.
I am just looking for a leader who will focus on the only issue that really matters. The fact that a central bank controls, prints and creates money to be lent to the government. That is backwards. I will ONLY vote for a leader who says they will take back the right of the people to print money so that they don’t pay interest on it to the private central bank and IMF!
What is your stance on this? or will you avoid it like every other politician.
The most important quality the leader must possess is honesty. We can never forgive the Conservative Party for the income trust debacle. They said they would not touch them and they did. Seniors depended on these investments due to low interest rates and the inconsideration that the Conservatives showed disgusts the honest voter. They could have stopped any more sales on the TSX in that direction but not injure seniors already invested – those losses can never be made up – seniors are too old – and as I told them, what do we do, hope for an early death?
Of the leader of the Liberal Party and of the leader of my country I demand the same: Honesty, Integrity and Pragmatism – and we’ve not had that in the leader of our country for at least a decade.
I say honesty because while you can tell the truth and still lie, you cannot lie and be honest;
I say integrity because without that your words and actions are meaningless;
And, lastly, I choose pragmatism because a good leader must make difficult, contentious and often unwelcome decisions and a pragmatic person will choose the most practical for Canadians and not for an ideal.
I believe that Canadians are ready to support and elect a party that is inclusive, accountable, transparent and one who respects the country that our previous generations built and will continue to give us the Canada that we all want and deserve, not the travesty we have at the moment. One that won’t sell off our resources to the highest bidder, but instead treat them as an asset for the benefit of all Canadians, and not for the benefit of a few corporations.
A party that gives more than lip service and token support for the ideals as expressed by the “Idle no More” and “Occupy” movements.
Is the Liberal Party that party?
I expect my political party to be lead by a Canadian that treats their opponents with respect and dignity because we’ve have far too much of the opposite. Canadians are open, generous, helpful, conscientious and respectful – we used to be renowned for that, but since our Harper Government we’ve lost the respect of the world. It is the hope of every Canadian that our next leader will begin the long road to earn it back.
I want the next federal political party that I vote for to, again, help us create a strong Canada that is unified within diversity, one that celebrates our differences and rejoices in our similarities and one who envisions a Canada that my children, grandchildren and all following generations can say with pride, “I am Canadian!”
The new leader must be compassionate, a good listener, and be ready to work collaboratively with all parties and all stakeholders on any issue. He/she must also be forward thinking and not be afraid of the political consequences that may come along with making the right stand on an issue. We need to move away from the toxic political atmosphere that is now the norm and move towards a cooperative system.
Be a superb communicator.
Be able to work on convergent rather than divergent lines.
Be a patriot.
Be willing to re-draw many of our social structures.
Be able to explain to Canadians that A) co-alitions are not evil B) sometimes you need to work together.
Be able to run a government more like an oligarchy and less like an autocracy – this is not the USA.
The next Liberal leader must be willing to lay all of his/her cards on the table. In other words, absolute transparency is a must. There MUST NOT be any closed room deals made under ANY circumstances. Bills must be faced with proper scrutiny before being shoved down Canada’s throat. A transparent party leader will be a transparent Prime Minister who will not do these things, as Mr. Harper has done.
They should be approachable and personable…sympathetic to human interests…unlike Mr. Harper.
They should be able to quickly and properly address issues that indigenous people face and be able to reach a common middle-ground with them that no one can disagree with….unlike Mr. Harper.
They should be able to see that there are 6 Canadians for every available job in Canada, most of which are in Alberta, and be able to realize that blaming the unemployed and demonizing them is in no way helping the situation. They should be fighting TOOTH AND NAIL to address this, and in fact, every single Liberal leadership candidate should be pressing this issue, and fighting to stop Diane Finley and Stephen Harper dead in their tracks on this. What they are doing is simply UN-CANADIAN. What they are inflicting on unemployed Canadians is no different than if they were to say to a disabled elderly woman, 90 years of age and requiring special care, that it is her fault that she is disabled and elderly and that she should be required to take care of herself. It’s simply villainizing victims of circumstance.
A leader of the Liberal party should value the environment and how it relates to the health of Canadians. Protection of our freshwater sources is an absolute NECESSITY of utmost importance, especially as our population grows and so does our demand for fresh water. This goes hand in hand with protecting our food supply from contamination and disease.
The leader of the Liberals should be represnting a kinder, gentler, liberal minded & a more progressive Canada where all Canadians are included. Those some steps maybe a hot button issues the gamble is worth taking as it would distinguish themeselves from the Conservative social contract based on Right Wing Christian values which most Canadians DONT value.
She should be a great team player for team CANADA. She should be a tireless constituency worker. She should have a great working knowledge of Parliament and she should be highly respected by her peers. She should understand the global context and the part that Canada will play in that context. Her primary commitment should be to our environment and to our people.
Bonne chance Elizabeth.
- A clear vision of Canada and our role in the world, based on an excellent knowledge of our history and an unshakeable commitment to continue in the steps of LaFontaine and Baldwin.
- High intellect, at the level of our Deputy Ministers.
- A personal interest in the well-being of all our people.
- Demonstrated leadership as a federal or provincial cabinet minister.
- Determination tempered by wisdom.
- Fluency in French and English.
- Born in the beautiful town of Malbaie.
Bonne chance Martin. Je suis avec vous!
Respectability and respect for fellow politicians. I tire of the ‘Opposition’s’ “job description” being merely to oppose. I would like to see competent comments intended to benefit Canadians.
Intelligence balanced with common sense–not patronizing arrogance or dramatic grandstanding.
Successful experience in business.
Willingness to work towards successful outcomes which could require compromise.
Uphold the rule of law for all Canadians.
Listen to and uphold Canadians’ right to personal choices and stop unnecessary intrusive regulations.
The leadership for Canada needs to put our future first and take care of the environment. Stephen Harper’s deals with China, the Omnibus Bill and the lack of transparency is abominable.
The Prime Minister should consider diverse opinions of Canadians, and not just his/her avid supporters. It’s time to stop pitching Canadians against Canadians.
Hi, I have never supported any party 100% – in a true democracy and our parliamentary system (which is broken) we are supposed to vote for the candidate. It is very clear to me that most citizens are so out of touch with our democracy that we urgently require a leader who can bring us together and then radically transform our country into a leading nation. The electorate needs education.
I have been alarmed at how the current ‘elected leader’ has a disregard for Parliamentary Democracy but this has come from complete ignorance on the Canadian Electorate. We are running out of time to correct this – I feel alarmed and threatened by the direction our country and our current leadership is taking us.
I hope the we can collectively change this – even the LPC need to wake up bring intelligence to our democratic process.
A driver was stuck in a traffic jam on the highway outside Ottawa. Nothing was moving. Suddenly, a man knocks on the window.
The driver rolls down the window and asks, “What’s going on?”
“Terrorists have kidnapped the entire Senate, and they’re asking for a $100 million dollar ransom. Otherwise, they are going to douse them all in gasoline and set them on fire. We are going from car to car, collecting donations.”
“How much is everyone giving, on an average?” the driver asks.
THE MAN REPLIES, “ROUGHLY A LITRE.”
Je pense qu’un Premier Ministre doit être compétent, avoir du vécu, avoir un intérêt soucieux par rapport à l’image du Canada sur la scène internationale. De plus, il doit être transparent dans ses actions et impartial pour toutes les provinces du Canada.
The new leader must have the economic acumen of Paul Martin, the personality of Pierre Trudeau, the tenaciousness of Jean Chretien, and the statesmanship of Lester Pearson. I think what the country loved about Pierre Trudeau was the fact that he was more a person than a politician. We’re all sick to death of leaders who are mouthpieces for back room boys who are the ones really running the country. Those types of leaders mouth rhetoric and put all their efforts into getting re-elected. We need someone like P.E. Trudeau who really didn’t give a damn about getting re-elected, but wanted to bring about certain changes. One could argue that the changes he brought about were not necessarily priorities in the great scheme of things (e.g. the metric system) but he had a vision and followed it and most importantly got the country to go along with it. Our new leader will need electability like Trudeau had, but also wisdom which I’m not sure a young person would have. In the short term I agree with others who feel that a temporary truce with the NDP is necessary to get Harper and his new republicans out of office and preferably out of Canada.
Hi
I have joined the party primarily to defeat the Harper party.
In my view that will require cooperation between the opposition parties before the next election.
I am hoping you will consider the options that will make this happen.
The country cannot go through another 4 years of Harper.
Brent
I am a true believer in the Bible. I would love to let you know that there is no leadership that is not ordained by God. I therefore, urge you to put God first if the bible says he knew you when in your mother’s womb, he knows the hair on your head. That means he knows your future and your potentials. Be prayerful and seek for God’s wisdom he will give it to you. Have trust in him you will see the outcome.
NOTE this: start now looking for African groups there are many you will have the vote. I can lead you to some if you want. I call this Divine connection which is networking as well.
As an immigrant on behalf of my fellow friends”immigrants” I would like to let you know that your party stands on God’s principles. How ?
1. God is love, your that.
2. He fed the poor, during your time in office 2002- so what 2006/7 the welfare system was favorable to the needs of many.
3. Offices you visited we were helped in one way of the other, Now days, you just see hate on people’s faces with the attitude go find it yourself you immigrant. You get piles of forms/phalets etc without no help.
4. Immigration has been tightened for no good reason. People forgetting that the more people come in the more job creation, taxes etc increases. Right now there is lack of employment which becomes a burden to the government. People want to work I can bring you many( Immigrants)
on this but have been failed.
5. Small business should be supported at least for 1/2 years. You will see how amaizing how many people will be employed.
6. Police has to be trained to stop the stereotyping. Many are being charged for no good reason. As long as your of a certain color your are done. What is written is that in front of the judge. Police is right. How will violence stop if someone knows even if I do good am bad. People in authority should have feelings for others.
7. Police should recruit many minority groups not only Italians or Portuguese. Tests and practicals should be little bit loosened for everyone to get on.
8. Find out what caused people to go out of Canada to other countries to do business. I read over MSN the numbers of Canadians living the country due to tight regulations on businesses, taxes, insurances and other bills.
9. Students Loans ie OSAP interest gets higher and higher. Even if you have some part time job and want to start paying. there is no option unless you pay off the interest. Wow Example I have $29,000 student loan. I failed to renew my interest relief application due to issues of shared accommodation. someone collects the mail and forget to drop off to the rightful person etc. My interest as of now has accumulated to $2600. To get a payment plan I have to first pay all the amount in Interest then I gain grounds to talk about my $29,000 actual loan. Now If I can manage $ 40 per mth on the interest how far can it take me without it”interest ” continuing to accumulate. To me, its a drop of water in the ocean. It would be okey if this interest is added on to my OSAP then get space to do whatever I can to start paying back. As for now NOTHING IS IN place.
10. Child care facilities; There should be various options for each family to afford child care. This gets so expensive in that some families quit work to take care for their kids. Think about the taxes the government lose in this.
11. Create an innovative package for people or group of people to register for funds to put in whatever business they want to do. It could be organic farming, organic Packing, manufacturing, export, design cloths etc, inventing gadgets, etc. What is out there is useless and people are seated on their ideas waiting for a welfare cheque.
With God Nothing is impossible.
Lets us take get to the streets
God Bless you
I want to see a Liberal leader who puts Canada ahead of the Party for if he/she does the Party will be a dominant force. People will see their needs and Canadian values being promoted and protected and will then associate that with the Liberal leader and his party. I am interested in cooperation in the short term-one election-in order to get Harper out of office. With the NDP leader not willing to cooperate it is scary that we may have another Con majority.
I am bothered by Liberal candidates who say that Joyce Murray is promoting an amalmagation of the NDP and Liberals. That is not the case. She wants to promote Liberal values as much as anybody else but is realistic and aware of the potential of vote splitting and a Con majority. She wants cooperation for one election so that the greater evil (the Conservative Party is prevented from furthering their ideology . Liberal candidates who do not appreciate the potential of a Con majority are not thinking of what is at stake and ultimately are not thinking of the country.
It would be interesting to have a states person instead of a politician.
A person who did not follow the existing politics and policies; a person who had the guts to stand up and share new ideas and programs with Canadians. A person who ignored the Conservative mentality of shovel as much filth out as you can and smear everyone in the path.
I would like a person who said Health Care is a mess. Here is my idea of how to fix it. Something new and innovative. Tell us what you think about the environment and how Canada can change to being a world leader again.
What do you think about defense and the terrorist situation. Speak to us about education in Canada.
Help all of us work with the party to make Canada strong, proud and civilized again. Show us a person and a party that adheres to good manners and kindness and respect.
Stand up and be brave enough to explain to all Canadians that yes, we have a problem with the Native Community and it isn’t just Ottawa; it is a system that is rotten in Ottawa and with the Chiefs of many of the first nations. Evolve a new system where accountability is expected on both sides.
Explain that throwing people in jail and making tougher sentences etc. is a bad idea. We need to take a look at why the person is a criminal. If he/she has mental issues, then let’s treat them. If they are in a gang and hurt innocent people, then punish them. Evaluate each case.
Put some teeth into violence against women. This behavior is unacceptable and cannot be tolerated.
The government should be accountable to the people of Canada for money given to countries – the fact that we have people in this country drinking dirty water should be fixed first.
And lastly, call me racist – I believe it is an honour to be a Canadian. I believe immigrants should leave their politics and baggage at home. I believe the laws of our land must be obeyed. I really believe that English must be taught and people must be able to read, write and speak English before becoming a citizen of this country. Religious freedom I do believe in but not when people
are being taught in the temples to do bad things.
Canada is the most wonderful country in the world. We must keep our reputation of being a decent country, an honest country and a country that believes in doing the right thing. Unfortunately under the conservative government, we have lost our reputation. Let’s get it back.
Pat
Wow!!! Who are you?! Wish I’d said all that. Maybe you should be running for the leadership.
A person who is capable of telling the truth, at least to himself.
We need a comprehensive energy plan:
Send Alberta oil East (and that’s downhill…), refine it in Manitoba (there was a refinery of Imperial Oil in Manitoba in the past); plan a hydro grid in Canada for Canadians.
The Liberal party seems to be too divided to be able to defeat Harper. Defeating Harper is the first and most important issue for the Liberals. I want a Liberal leader who will promise to do everything in their power to defeat Harper including cooperating with the otherparties to ensure an election loss for Canada’s worst nightmare.
The Liberal leader should possess the following characters:
1. Should have complete understanding of Canada in the domestic and foreign policy regimens.
2. Should open up transperantly to the youth in the age group of 18 to 35
3. Should be an eloquent communicator on one-on-one basis, in conferences and while addressing a rally.
5. He should not demean other candidates and be aggressive on personal affairs of other liberal leader hopefuls
6. He should have solid plans to take Canada dramatically forward economically providing jobs to the youths who graduated from School, College and Universities. He should not spell his slate openly before he was elected as the Leader of the Liberal Party.
7. He should be committed to the maintenance of global environment
8. He should come out of the Establishment sustained liberal policies held in the last two decades.
Voici les qualités d’un Chef:
Integrity
Idéalisme
Good Judgment
Bons sens des priorités
Doit être responsable
Good timming (Know when to do what)
Pick top team
Courage politique
In my opinion, out next leader’s first priority needs to be cooperating with the NDP and Greens in order to defeat Harper in the next election and quickly replace our first-past-the-post electoral system.
In my opinion:
1. a leader needs to be first and foremost fiscally responsible. Overspending jeopardises the very social programs that it purports to help. Mind the bank balance and governance becomes easy.
2. a leader needs to be able to manage and control the factions within his/her own party to prevent white elephants like C68 and the long gun registry – which did no good for anyone, wasted billions of dollars, and alienated half the country. A good leader should have nipped that abomination in the bud and redirected the energy and funding in a direction that would have actually done something positive.
3. A Liberal leader would never sell-out his party or his country by considering cohabitation with the NDP. Liberals are not anti-business socialists but the NDP are.
4. a leader shouldrecognise that the west is growing in population and economic importance and that eventually the LPC will need to appeal to those voters if they ever want to form a government again. The west will never support the LPC as it is now. Adapt and overcome or be a 3rd place party forever.
1. I am interested in a leader who will save CBC, to give us the quality of reporting that we deserve in this country. It is unbiased and totally reports different information that other stations.
2. The new leader needs to gain control of the deficit, and the Members of Parliament need to show leadership by incurring the same hardships as the rest of the country.
3. I understand we require immigrants; however, not at the expense of losing our own identity as Canadians by allowing our Christian beliefs to go by the wayside in order to keep the immigrant happy.
4. An open policy for the Government in showing us what they are spending on, and stop the patronage appointments.
5. Cooperate with NDP and do not get caught up in the bashing of other people and parties like the Conservatives do. Remain professional.
Handle Harper’s attacks with grace and wit backed up by better ideas. Ideas and policies that match the needs and ideals f Canadians, not the Libertarians who deny child abuse in their endless pursuits of “personal rights” – ie a refusal to accept that a society does better when rich and poor are not hugely different. The less difference in income across the spectrum, the better off we’ll all be. WIthout contributions from all to support the vulnerable we are less, many have no schools, health care etc etc.
Nobody is worth a salary of 10,000 times the salary of the lowest paid employees. If you think your skills are worth that much more, risk your own capital.
I do not support any one political party. My eye is on those that WALK THEIR TALK, of which there is a scarcity across all political parties.
Your question should perhaps be better phrased, not to listen to what just Canadian Liberals have to say, rather to listen to what ALL CANADIANS have to say. This whole ‘support one party or another concept JUST DOES NOT WORK.
May I suggest that more and more previously silent Canadians are awakening & beginning to give VOICE to their concerns over what they SEE government officials doing, regardless of the stories these ELECTED officials spin to get & retain the voter’s support. Overall, the carelessness and self-serving averice with which government officials spend our tax dollars will not be tolerated much longer.
May I suggest that if you have a genuine interest in doing what’s right for Canadians & this country – show it by your ACTIONS. I would gladly follow your leadership were you to do so.
Martin Cauchon brings to the national forum a rare combination of national and internation experience as an accomplished Cabinet Minister, a sophisticated and inclusive vision Canada. Martin understands what it used to mean to be Canadian around the world. He understands it because he helped create Canada’s distinguished and respected profile abroad. No other Liberal Party Leadership candidate comes close to the respect Martin commands internationally, to his committment to prepare and launch our youth, not punish and imprison them. He understands Canada needs more education and wealthcae, not penitentiaries and fighter jets.
Lets elect a leader could win past this leadership campaign and go nose to nose against PM Harper…and WIN.
Must work with all like-minded citizens to ensure we never get to this point again in Canadian history, where a government with a dictator for a prime minister, can rip the country apart with his ideological mania.
Must be a leader for ALL Canadians, value different points-of-view, debate then decide.
Must balance corporate and social needs….not give the place away to powerful moneyed interests who pretend they are acting in the country’s best interest.
The next Liberal leader must have the courage to work with the NDP and Green party to not allow the conservatives to win in ridings like mine (Scarborough Centre) with 35% of the vote.I don’t want any party to have power as badly as I don’t want the Conservatives.
No leader can win against Harper without cooperating with the other opposition parties in my opinion.
As for the required qualities; We shall find out when he or she is elected.

I feel that the new leader of the Liberal party should;
1) create a climate of co-operations/coordination with the other oposition parties to defeat Harper
2) create an environment with greatly reduced fossil fuel production/transportation
3) increase funding for research and production of alternative energy
4) create funding for increase electric public transportation
5) create laws that will enhance the production of electric vehicles and the service facilities of these vehicles in every former gas-station
6) create incentives to convert all private and public buildings to become energy collector
7) Change the National Building code to facilitate #6
8) advocate the creation of an International Court for Environmental Crimes – which would deal with rationing/distribution of fossil fuels in the world
9) Establish a tax system that will lead to a more equal distribution of wealth. Anyone with an income over $200,000 should required to give any money in excess of that sum to non-profit, none- political registered organization.
THAT IS JUST THE START!!!!!!!!!!!
I believe I would support one on one debates… even if it was just on youtube.
Hi Martin,
The next leader of the Canadian Liberals (and therefore, presumably the country) requires many of the qualities listed here by others.
However, the quality I would like to mention is ‘foresight’.
I would like our next Prime Minister to realize that in order for Canada to compete in global markets, we have to adapt to 21st century solutions to world-wide problems, the most important being climate change.
It seems that all of Stephen Harper’s time as PM has been spent finding ways to destroy this great land. Unfortunately, the next PM has to not only fix everything that Harper has tried to sabotage, but he/she needs to catch up with the rest of the world in finding and building solutions to the critical problem of climate change.
So yes, the next Liberal leader (and then PM) must have the foresight to surround him- or herself with good people to bring Canada back to its standing as a world leader in environmental stewardship, problem-solving, peacekeeping, and being the cleanest, most beautiful and respected nation on the planet!
Sincerely,
Linda Mercier
Dear Martin: You know what has to be done to get the liberal party in front of the pack, stay the course intended to get you there. Its the team what shall make it happen, we all are spokes in the wheel, try to look at the big picture. good luck. Hubertus in Victoria, BC.
Politicians should listen to experts where such exist, for example in Victoria a 800+ million dollar sewage treatment plan is being foisted upon us despite environmental scientists and public health officials unanimously stating it offers no benefit over the present system.
Similarly marijuana should be legalized, taxed and regulated just like alcohol and tobacco.
A balanced perspective of economic development and environmental preservation; an appreciation of what we (but more importantly our grand-children) have to lose in exclusive pursuit of “economic” wealth. Citizens first, not corporations ……..
The next leader of the liberal party should be someone who cannot be bought by the 1% and who actually governs with the concerns of all the citizens of Canada. Not only for those who are part of the banking and resource extraction industries.
I believe you have a good understanding of what Canada doesn’t want . But your message describing your platform has not been heard enough. I have followed you closely and like what I here. But you needier exposure in the media or community rallies. The liberal party must have a leader that said what he deals and not what the lobbying groups are pushing. Simple good ideas that bring jobs back to the communities. Tired of Canadian tax payers subsidizing growing corporations , just to see them go over seas . Is this how the Canadian consumer and taxpayer is repaid after 30 years. There are plenty of companies that have sent work and built plants elsewhere with the support of taxpayers money. If this ain’t stealing and turning your back on your country I don’t know what is. These corporations getting handouts every year , turn around give the execs big bonuses and threaten to leave if we don’t support them. Blackmail being rewarded. This is a phelony , they must be responsible to pay back this money if they send jobs over seas. And the oil in this country belongs to all of us . The deals are being made to benefit the few. We need a tough and honest leader that won’t mind falling and getting banged up ,it will be a fight.
Thank you , George
WHAT QUALITIES SHOULD THE NEXT LEADER OF THE LIBERAL PARTY POSSESS IN ORDER TO BECOME PRIME MINISTER OF CANADA?
1. Pit bull Stamina
2. Intelligence
3. Patriotism
4. Inferential Foresight
5. Wisdom
How about adding:
Honesty, and
Ethical decision making
That is what has been lacking for several decades now.
Martin
I want answers to important questions concerning our nations sovereignty environment and foreign policy.
just a few. 1. central banking has created havoc through out the world and reached epidemic proportions. What safe quards would you try to impose for this country. 2. our atmosphere is being sprayed with toxic chemicals Chemtrails many many people are seeing, Would you address this problem in the commons? 3. Foreign policy we were seen as a peace keeping country with the Harper government I think we have lost that . Do you aggree?
Best Regards Ed Wallace
I fully agree with you on your view on Marc Garneau. I did let him know that I did not appreciate this grandstanding. I want someone , a leader that will approach and be involved with the grassroots in the development of Liberal Policies.
My vote truly depends on the direction and intent each Liberal Candidate offers on one key subject:
Cannabis and the promotion of its use as an industrial staple in every facet it deems itself superior, as well as a free-to-grow, beneficial health and dietary staple for all Canadian Citizens. Free is extremely affordable, as well constitutionally inline.
These two applications of this miraculous all-natural and free plant will both allow us to near completely NEGATE our Carbon footprint as well offer us an absolutely proactive avenue to near complete Human Sustenance.
The status quo of all aspects of this simple plant is simply destructive on so many levels, including constitutionally.
My vote goes to the most proactive Candidate who offers the BOLD stance this subject immediately requires.
Consider this simple subject will offer Canada an opportunity to again be in an enviable GLOBAL position to turn this subject in the direction it should have maintained 80 years ago, demonstrating leadership in HUMAN & INDUSTRIAL Sustainability all-the-while demonstrating how to almost completely reduce our Carbon Footprint! All do-able, all free!
Let me know.

I want a leader who puts Canada first. Canadian growth not sell offs, building the country not trade agreements, education and health in the great Canadian tradition. Canada first not Canada for sale and certainly not Canada for the rich and the corporate.
He must be flexible enough to consider cooperation with the other opposition parties in the next election as this is the only way to beat Harper. He should also support election reform and more funding for the CBC to get my vote.
I gave you the thumbs up… but I’m not sure it is about beating Harper, so much as about great policy and amazing legislation. Cooperation for the best representation!
This leadership campaign should be a time of rebuilding and redefining who we are as Liberals . Collaboration, inclusiveness and ethical intentions should guide the process of discovery and critical analysis. Indeed a one on one debate violates the integrity of the process.
Listening to the grassroots and formulating a collective vision and policy platform should frame the outcomes of this leadership campaign. Our leader does not need to stand alone in a winner takes all at any expense – that is not change rather it is the status quo.
Martin, continue your earnest efforts to bring our voices forward. You are right, the actions of a Marc Garneau speak volumes and implicates all supporters.
What is at risk when the eyes of the country are on us?
Thank you Martin.
the next leader should be open to suggestions yet dedicated and firm in his beliefs for the future of Canada.
I think the idea of dispensing with the bloated partisan members of the Senate, if not the Senate itself, should be seriously considered.
At the very least, the rules for being seated senate members should be reviewed and updated.
I think the new leader should have the charisma, ideas and vision to energize and involve the young Canadians who have become zoned out by the old boys network and feel their vote does not count, so what’s the use of even voting.
What the Liberals need is a leader who can see things from many perspectives. Charisma will appeal to the masses but content will get things done. Content is not something which is inherent in one person but is something a leader extract from the people around him (her).A Liberal leader needs content, charisma, bi lingual, and trust to delegate important decisions to others. Charisma gets politicians elected, content allows politicians to retain power. I believe we need a change in Ottawa but will Liberals serve a different menu.
There is nothing more important than regaining our Sovereignty through Bank Reform. This means we should return to that period prior to 1974 when Canada borrowed its money from the Bank of Canada interest free. Our money would be distributed as needed by OUR Economy to create a STABLE ECONOMY instead of this one which is manipulated by Private Banks for their own wealth not ours. We must be DEBT FREE so we can invest in Social Programs and Infra Structure. Those who do not understand this has no right to rule.
this is so true!!! we need to get out from under the grip of these banksters like they did in Iceland.
Our liberal leader should have following quality
1. Crystal clear life no charges or accusation whatsoever of ever
2. Honest but Smart and Hardworking
3. Justice to all Canadian or anybody worldwide so equate all world populations in one straight JUSTIFIABLE WAY
4. Team leader and have good clarity on world polity
5. Muslims are subjected all in one brush now a days you will not do the same and will say spade a spade that applicable to MIDDLE EAST in particular and World in General
6. Africans are neglected by world and are really poor you will take special interest and form a ministry to help them come up well individually and countrywide
7. Last but not least our own aboriginal we will say sorry for all wrong and will cuddle them so they stage back.
I pray to almighty Allah you or whoever take helm of affair at LIBERAL CONVENTION will abide above and become real HUMAN for all HUMANITY ameen

Honesty and a willingness to collaborate with other candidates using each ones particular strengths and talents in order to present a strong alterrnative to Steven Harpers dictatorial form of government.
I should like to see the future prime minister of canada, an honnest human being, who would not make his decision because of the circumstances, but because of the right and true principals.
I want a leader that values liberal supporters ideas to develop policy from the ground up. The leader then should lead, but not be a dictator like we have in Harper with his false majority government. We need a leader that will fight for proportional representation so that the government of Canada actually represents Canadian views as they are, with none being silenced or swallowed up into the larger groups as AV would do. AV gives the same results as FPTP after going through a dog and pony show. When we are committed to true democratic representation, Canadians will be dedicated to our Liberal party that have it to them. Real fairness in a true democracy.
Bonne chance Martin.
Yves
We need a truly honest PM that represents Canadians not multi national corporations. We need all who live here to pay their fair share of taxes as we have a vast country to maintain. We need to forget about the right wing and what they want next , they will never be satisfied. We need a PM that realizes that our natural resources belong to all Canadians, not just a few well placed friends of the PM. It is time we acted like a country with its’ own identity , not just a British colony , or an American colony or a colony of the choosen few. We need to stand tall and be true to ourselves ; not to corporations. We also need to return the Bank Of Canada to its’ rightful place in our economy. Radical , perhaps , but true. Thank you.
Cooperate with the other parties to defeat Harper and introduce a new electoral system.
A leader should leave games for kids,Canadians are savy enough to know when they have been lied to and strung along,we need a leader with a vision and no hidden agenda.Keep the land ,water and air clean so that Canadians can be healthy and the economy will thrive.Lets be the peace keepers again and think on our feet.
Cooperation: I think that the leader of the Liberal party should be willing to cooperate with the Greens and the NDP to counter the attacks on our democracy from the Harper-style Conservative party.
Coalition on the Left: I know a coalition of NDP and Liberal parties is unlikely for a variety of reasons that I am sure you can list. However, the Right formed the Reform-PC coalition, so it can be done.
Modesty: It appears that the Liberal Party is not the natural governing party of Canada that it may think itself to be, so the Liberal establishment may need to be changed if it will not change.
Listening is a Good Thing: There is a huge grass roots movement in Canada that you need to ask about and listen to. It is currently directed against the Harper style of government, but it is asking for a new era in running the country, one that is open and transparent and that represents the people via a new PR system of elections.
Good luck.
I have only 2comments:
1. I agree with your statement re: one to one debate or all candidates debate
2. Regrettably, if Trudeau wins this leadership vote, I cannot vote Liberal, for the first time in my life.
OMG, you took the words right out of my mouth. I have always voted Liberal but feel for the first time that I will be unable to if Justin Trudeau is elected party leader. I can`t believe people are so naive as to believe someone who speaks in sound bites and clichés could lead our country in the current fiscal environment. We need strong leadership, vision, out-of-the-box thinking, backbone, and drive.
In my opinion, we need Martha.
Hello Martin,
You are the first one I’ve personally responded to, so here is what I have to say to the Liberal party of Canada. Stop this nonsense of making each other look bad in the competition to become the leader! You guys are worse than American politicians evicerating each other in the public forum.
As a life long Liberal, this is making my choices very hard indeed. Make who you are, and what you stand for known, but cut out the griping and mud-slinging.
its about policy and platform!
Watching Jim Flatherty claiming the Canadian economy makes me ask ,where are the liberal leaders explaining to Canadians that the health of our banking system and our economy came from the Paul Martin policies.Seven balanced budjets before the cons took over, nothing but deficites since, where are our leaders .Hold the cons feet to the fire, every day they screw up define them and don’t let them define liberals with lies.
I like the idea of a leader “who listens” but that does not mean is that I want a populist leader that governs by the poles or only governs for his or her base. We have that now in Stephen Harper.
If you are listening to me, what I want is a leader who has integrity, believes in democratic institutions and traditions, measures all actions against a deep belief in human rights, is generous, compassionate, thoughtful, persistent, assertive and relies on evidence all of the time and is smart. With those qualities I can trust that the policies that person pursues will not be far from what I would chooses and the party will remain one that I will support.
Next leader needs to address the RCMP brutality cult issue, the rampant murder of civilians by RCMP, the deliberate cover ups, the nation wide tax funded domestic terrorist group needs to be disbanded, and every member locked up.
I can tell you that Finlay and now Marc Garneau have lost my support because of selfish moves during this Leadership campaign. I will be watching the debate on Sunday very closely.
The ability to beat Stephen Harper. The ability to unite the left and make the Liberals appear to be the only choice for people wanting Mr. Harper out. Can you convince NDP supporters to vote with you in the name of the left winning power and Canada becoming a progressive, thinking country again. Convince westerners that the oil patch is not sustainable for the long run and we need to diversify our economy before we become an international joke due to our cavalier attitude to the environment under the reformaTORIES.
Mostly and above all, the future leader should have integrity and impeccable ethics. We all had enough of the ads scam, attack ads and tainted politicians.
Commitment to do what is best for all Canadians and not just for the privileged ones. Commitment to be transparent and ensure that the spending of taxpayer’s money benefits all Canadians and not just the privilege.
Respect all Canadians and be a unifying figure. Respect the Native Peoples of Canada and attempt to improve relations with them and most of all improve living standards, particularly with respect to education and the creation of opportunities for them to be autonomous.
Commitment to create job opportunities for the young graduates who are not struggling to find full time employment.
Commitment to create the opportunities for a knowledge based economy which is not a one dimensional one based on the exploitation of the natural resources. Commitment to substantially increase spending for research and development and attempt to match the level reached by the Scandinavian countries.
Commitment to help the poor and destitute Canadians.
Work toward:
Creating A sustainable economy
Co-operating with NDP and Green parties
Changing the voting system (end first past the post)
Remembering that Canada doesn’t end at the Rockies
Creating a more dignified parliament (I’m really fed up with the combative nature currently operating. It’s contributing to the malaise and disillusion of voters)
I am a life long Liberal. I have worked for two Liberal leaders in opposite sides of this great country. I understand.
With that preface, I pose the following question; “Is it the goal of our party to put forth policy and positions that a majority of Canadians will support and vote for, thus we form the next government?” If that is the case, then all we have to do is hire a polling company, do extensive surveying, take the results and package them and hit the campaign trail.
If however we want to get risqué and actually put forth to the Canadian people what we actually stand for and believe in, then the challenge becomes not of packaging but engaging Canadians in persuasive dialogue, hoping to convince them and change their vote. This takes courage. Some would well argue that it borders on political stupidity! If, however, you choose to go this route, then you will need a “real” leader!
I am an numeracy educator working in ten northern Alberta schools. All of them are FN or Metis. I am an eleventh generation United Empire Loyalist from Nova Scotia. I am disappointed that this site does not address the the plight of our aboriginal people. As a Canadian, I see daily where the pavement ends; As a Liberal I want to address that, I want my leader to have the insight and conviction to once and for all confront the issues and resolve them.
There are of course other issues on the Canadian radar. But here again, we need to determine what we stand for, what must be done to convince enough Canadians to support us and to elect a leader with enough internal fortitude to accept the challenge and lead us to victory, based on our convictions and not on a shopping list that might get us elected.
Thank you Martin for putting this form up.
David
I want a leader who will make a commitment to electoral reform in the first YEAR OF BEING IN POWER or support another parties efforts also a willingness to work with opposition parties to defeat the present government. Put Canada first!!!!
I also agree with your concern that all members running for Leader of the Liberal Party should have equal opportunity in debates.
Marc Garneau did not win points when he challenged one person to a special debate.
The next leader should be rational and open-minded. They should be willing to consider evidence that contradicts their point of view, and not do things one way just because that’s the way they were done in the past.
Enough balls to fight back against the negative ads that the Tory Reform party will ri=un against whoever is the leader. Tell the Cnadaians the many lies that will be Harpie’s Legacy. Being polite to Harpie will not win votes. I have a full page of hid broken propmises. The appointm, ents of Brazeau, Duffy and Wallin makes me sick of Harpie-the control freak and hypocrit. Yes I am angry because he is getting away with his lies. Where is the honesty and transparency he was elected on?
Harpie has shown little respect for democracy.
M. Cauchin,
Good day. Does your adherence to party protocol, vis-a-vis one on one debates, signify that you intend to be THE party leader. I sincerely hope that you will be willing to admit free-votes in the H of C, rather than the toe the party line hegemony that exists now.
Free votes … is anything ever free? With closed doors you won’t see. What would the mechanism be? Thumbs up for the sentiment.
Shared values with a majority of Canadians…no matter what “class” , age, etc…what is it that a person in Canada shares with other Canadians? Tap into that in an honest, authentic, transparent way, and you have a Leader! This is what PM Harper has tried to do with militarism, but note how it has not worked except with his ardent base . Contrast that with secure, funded health care….interesting how Canadians consistently put it high on the values list!
Hi Martin,
As a university student studying engineering, I want a leader who will fight for us to invest in reseach and developing new technologies. We need money going into research so Canada can stay competitive on the world stage. Canada also needs to stay on top of education in the country at all stages and although the provinces have control the federal government should show their commitment to education. Along with this we need to focus on our environment and invest in long term green solutions to reduce our emissions and be a world leader in green energy. That is what I want to see in my government, standing strong and looking to the future of our country and our world.
Thank you for listening,
Matthew
When Marc Garneau asked for a one on one debate with Justin Trudeau it made it clear that he was only concerned with his own well being and not the health and welfare of the liberal party. Lets get together and lead the liberal party down the middle of the road ,remember we are not a left wing party as i have read in a lot of comments .One more thing when talking about Canadians lets not refer to middle class Canadians ,Canada is not a class state ,I am retired now but when i was working I was a middle income Canadian .Rick
How should the Liberal party lead the international efforts on protecting and supporting the People of Syria?
Ability to pick good talent for his or her team.
Ability to lead that team.
Ability to understand complex and long term issues.
Ability not to be ‘snowed’ by ‘experts’
Good negotiation, collaboration skills.
Experience in politics.
Experience in government.
S’il vous plait, épargnez-nous des querelles internes car c’est Haper qui en sortira gagnant. Trouvons un terain d’entente pour le bien être de notre beau pays, le Canada.
